Bound by beef! Bona Fide Beef is owned and operated by Jaslyn, Aubri, Mariah, and Kohltin.
While each of us has had a unique set of experiences that led us here, we all have one thing in common — a shared love for the land, animals, and people that allow us to make this dream a reality.
Jas was born and raised on A Lazy L ranch in Broadwater, NE, which has been around since her grandparents moved the ranch from Sidney, NE in the 1970's. Jas’s father, Mark, often served as her babysitter before she was old enough to start school. Jas gained experience on farming and cows from her dad and grandpa and learned all about gardening and cooking from her mom, Brandi.
Jas received her Bachelor’s degree of Applied Science in Agriculture from UNL in 2017. She finished her degree online in order to return to the ranch and be present to work on the operation. Jas always had a keen interest in genetics, which was one of her favorite college courses. She started incorporating the best possible genetics for their cow herd; Jas’s goal is to raise cows that are friendly, healthy growers, and perform well on the dinner plate as well.
Aubri was raised in Yacolt, WA on a 5-acre piece of land with her mom, dad, and younger brother. She grew up loving horses, soccer, running, spending time with family, and being on the local rivers and lakes. Although they had a few chickens in the yard growing up, Aubri did not have much exposure to agriculture. She graduated with her BSN in nursing from Montana State University and started working as a nurse in Washington state. In 2016 she moved to Denver, CO which is where she found her love for emergency medicine and is where she eventually met Jaslyn. Little did Aubri know she would become a ranch wife and would be diving into the agricultural world. Aubri now splits her time between working as an Air Link flight nurse, selling beef, and helping Jas on A Lazy L Ranch.
Mariah was born and raised in San Diego, CA and spent her summers working on her family's cattle ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills. Having a passion for agriculture, she decided to leave California and attend the University of Nebraska-NCTA where she received her associates degree in Agribusiness and started dating Kohltin. She later graduated from Chadron State College with a bachelors degree in Agribusiness. Kohltin and Mariah have been together since 2018 and have a yellow Labrador named Bay. They're getting hitched in June of 2023 and we couldn't be more excited for them! When Mariah is not selling beef, she is a Remarketing Coordinator for a John Deere dealership and enjoys helping Kohltin with different projects on the farm and ranch.
Kohltin is originally from Bridgeport, NE but spent the majority of his childhood in Denver, CO. With family in western Nebraska, he spent many summers working on their family ranch. After graduating high school he attended the University of Nebraska-NCTA where he received an associates degree in Decertified Agriculture. NCTA is also where he met his fiance Mariah, who is also living and working on the Lund operation now. Aside from Bona Fide Beef, he runs a registered and commercial cow herd with his dad and farms alfalfa and corn.
Jas and Aubri met in 2017 through the Farmer’s Only dating service (just kidding – it was Tinder).
Jas ventured into the city to meet Aubri for a weekend at the Denver Pride Festival, and then Aubri made the trip east the next weekend to see what Jas’s life on the ranch entailed.
After a few romantic tractor and ATV rides to explore the beautiful prairie, sandstone cliffs, and green alfalfa fields, Aubri was convinced she needed to spend more time in Nebraska with Jas. Unfortunately, Aubri was moving back to Washington to be closer to family for the summer. Never ones to shy away from a challenge, Aubri and Jas made the effort to stay in touch and made the time to travel cross country and go on a few more adventures.
When autumn rolled around, Aubri decided to move back to Denver to be closer to Jas and the ranch.
One and a half years later, they eloped in the courthouse in Sterling, Colorado in the middle of a stormy, brutal calving season on February 20, 2019.
Jas and Aubri quickly realized that people in the city were looking to get locally raised beef where they knew they could trust the source and quality. Aubri’s coworkers in the emergency department were some of their first customers.
The pair began using Double J processing in Pierce, CO to get their beef butchered by a USDA inspected facility and invested in a walk-in freezer so they could store beef year-round for customers who were lacking freezer space in the city.
They started direct-marketing USDA inspected beef to family and friends in 2018 and would make deliveries to Colorado and even all the way to Washington state a few times while visiting Aubri’s family.
Bona Fide Beef (BFB) was born in 2020 and has been a slow but steadily growing operation. The walk-in freezer receives annual USDA inspection certification and the beef all comes from local USDA inspected processing facilities.
BFB gained two more business owners in late 2021, Kohltin Lund and Mariah Mulvey.
